how to say "terror attack" in Hebrew

פיגוע

This past Wednesday evening four Jews (civilians) were murdered by Arab terrorists near חֶבְרוֹן (khehv-ROHN) - Hebron.

Modern Hebrew's word for such an attack is פִּגּוּע (pee-GOO-ah). The word comes from the root פ.ג.ע., which bears the concept of
harm.

May we hear of no such פיגועים anywhere in the world, this coming year, or ever again.

  1. AMEN. Unfortunately, as I started visiting Israel during the Oslo War, "pigua" was one of the first Hebrew words I learned. :-(

Thankfully, my time living here, and especially at Ulpan La-Inyan, has increased my knowledge of joyful words in Hebrew. May there be many more happy and many fewer sad words in my vocabulary.

  2. Well, one one hand, I'm grateful for the new Hebrew word. On the other... *sigh*
